For the fiscal year commencing in April of the coming year, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is set to substantially ramp up its budgetary support for the advancement of state-of-the-art semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), with the amount nearly tripling to reach roughly 1.23 trillion yen (equivalent to 7.9 billion US dollars). The ministry's overall budget will witness an approximate 50% surge compared to the preceding year, soaring to 3.07 trillion yen. This notable increase is predominantly attributed to a significant uptick in expenditure within the chips and AI domains, reflecting Japan's strategic emphasis on fostering innovation and competitiveness in these pivotal technological sectors.
