The worldwide shortage of artificial intelligence (AI) chips is intensifying, compelling procurement leaders from tech behemoths such as Microsoft and Google to rush to South Korea in an effort to secure memory chip supplies from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. During negotiations, a Microsoft procurement executive abruptly left the meeting after the supplier faced difficulties in meeting the demanded supply levels. Similarly, Google terminated the employment of several procurement heads due to their inability to secure long-term agreements beforehand, leaving the company exposed to supply chain vulnerabilities and resulting in the rejection of their requests for extra supplies. This situation highlights the growing concern among tech giants regarding the stability of the AI chip supply chain. To guarantee a consistent and long-term supply of memory, essential procurement teams from these tech giants are now permanently based in South Korea, focusing on products like High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM). Considering the high concentration of suppliers and the fact that a substantial portion of South Korean companies' production capacity is already reserved, firms are compelled to adopt a strategy of maintaining a "frontline presence." Additionally, tech giants are relocating their core procurement roles to Asia, hiring experts with specialized knowledge to capture critical resources and establish supply chain barriers. However, it's important to note that market risks persist, and investments should be approached with caution.
