On November 17 (local time), semiconductor giant GlobalFoundries (GF) made a public announcement regarding its acquisition of Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), a Singaporean microelectronics chip manufacturer. This strategic move is poised to propel GF's innovation in silicon photonics technology. By integrating AMF's manufacturing facilities, intellectual property portfolio, and highly skilled technical workforce, GF is set to substantially broaden its footprint in the silicon photonics technology sector. This expansion is expected to position GF as the world's largest silicon photonics chip manufacturer in terms of revenue. Furthermore, GF has outlined plans to establish a silicon photonics research and development (R&D) center in Singapore. This center will work in tandem with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to pioneer next-generation materials and bolster GF's production capacity and R&D prowess.
