Beginning this month, numerous computer accessory retailers in Tokyo's renowned Akihabara district have instituted purchase restrictions on memory modules, solid-state drives (SSDs), and mechanical hard drives. As of November 7, establishments like PC Shop Ark, Tsukumo PC Main Store II, and TSUKUMO eX. have verified the implementation of these rationing policies. Specifically, PC Shop Ark limits purchases to a maximum of 8 items per customer group, whereas TSUKUMO outlets restrict buyers to acquiring no more than 2 SSDs/HDDs and 4 memory sticks per group (with flexibility for customers purchasing complete systems or Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions). The rationing stems from critically low inventory levels, with no definitive timeline for when these restrictions might be lifted. Certain products have already been taken off the shelves, and vendors currently without purchase caps may adopt similar measures in the near future. Lately, Akihabara has witnessed a substantial spike in the prices of these goods, with some DDR5 memory variants experiencing a twofold increase. Vendors attribute the scarcity of components and the consequent price escalations to the burgeoning demand for AI-centric products.
