In the upcoming weeks, Google is poised to incur an antitrust fine from the European Union, stemming from allegations of anti-competitive practices within its advertising technology sector. This fine originates from a complaint lodged by the European Publishers Council. After a thorough four-year investigation, the European Commission formally accused Google in 2023 of favoring its own advertising services over those of competitors. Teresa Ribera, the newly appointed EU antitrust chief, underscored that the penalty is intended to incentivize Google to rectify its behavior, rather than merely serve as a punitive measure. As such, the fine will be notably lower than the 2018 record of €4.3 billion.
