On April 25th, OpenAI revealed that owing to the immense popularity of Deep Research among its user base, the company has decided to launch a streamlined version of the tool. This move aims to broaden access and elevate rate limits for Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers. Notably, free users will now have access to this lightweight version as well. Leveraging OpenAI's o4-mini model, this new version retains the same level of intelligence as the standard Deep Research, but at a considerably lower operational cost. It maintains the depth and quality users have come to expect, while typically delivering more concise and clear responses. Once the usage limit of the standard version is reached, the system seamlessly transitions to the lightweight version to continue addressing user queries. As of now, all Plus, Team, and Pro users enjoy expanded access to Deep Research, with enterprise and educational users set to follow suit within the next week, receiving the same level of access as Team users. The lightweight version of Deep Research is now readily available to all free users.
