On October 24, the UK government made an announcement regarding a substantial investment of approximately £600 million (equivalent to around $800 million) aimed at bolstering artificial intelligence security. This move is a strategic response to the potential biological, health, and cybersecurity threats that AI may pose. In specific terms, the UK government is set to allocate £100 million towards the establishment of an AI biosecurity laboratory. Another £65 million will be earmarked for the formulation of pathogen response strategies. OpenAI and Anthropic are set to grant model access valued at up to £200 million, with backing from companies like Google DeepMind. Moreover, the UK's existing AI Safety Institute is slated to receive an extra £120 million in investment. Meanwhile, £130 million will be dedicated to fortifying cyber defenses for vital infrastructure and the broader economy. The UK government will also set aside £60 million for investment in AI robotics, automation, and manufacturing firms. Additionally, it will provide funding to support AI research, chip design, innovation in healthcare policy, and local AI initiatives. UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan emphasized that the government is resolute in its commitment to transforming the AI biosecurity laboratory into a global frontrunner. The aim is to unite top-tier scientific research forces to safeguard the public from emerging biological threats.
