Tencent’s AI personal assistant offering, QClaw, has declared, after 188 days of public beta testing, that it will discontinue its services in December 2026 and will assist users in transitioning to its in-house product, WorkBuddy. This move heralds the onset of rivalry in the burgeoning personal assistant domain within China’s AI sector.
Taking a retrospective glance at the strategic layout (or deployment) of Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu, ByteDance, along with four prominent AI startups, across ten pivotal AI segments over the past four years, it becomes apparent that the industry’s competitive cycle is swiftly contracting, with product lifespans diminishing continuously.
The phenomena of product renaming, integration, and discontinuation have now become the norm, as standalone products gradually merge towards general-purpose assistants and underlying platforms. Following extensive deployments that capitalize on existing business scenarios, major internet companies are generally pivoting towards internal resource integration. Meanwhile, startups are predominantly opting to concentrate their resources and place strategic bets on core directions.
As features of general-purpose assistants continue to overlap and converge, the race for the next-generation super entrance is just commencing.
