On October 22, concerns over the sustainability of massive artificial intelligence investments were raised as borrowing costs climbed, potentially halving SoftBank Group's market value from its June peak. On Thursday, SoftBank's shares fell as much as 6.7%, bringing the cumulative decline since its historic high on June 2 to 50%. The earnings reports of major U.S. tech companies failed to allay market concerns, with bond prices of cloud computing service provider CoreWeave Inc. dropping to levels reflecting credit distress, highlighting industry financing risks and intensifying global worries about AI spending. Kazuyuki Muramatsu, head of investment management at Nagomi Capital, pointed out that as investors increasingly focus on the financial health of AI companies, SoftBank's vulnerability stands out due to its highly leveraged financial structure and rising borrowing costs. He warned that if global markets turn pessimistic about AI growth prospects, SoftBank Vision Fund may face valuation losses and need to pay higher premiums for future financing.
