On October 20, a senior Google executive shared his views on Europe's concerns that US companies will dominate the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. He pointed out that the current AI sector is fiercely competitive, with rivalry between large tech companies and startups driving prices down and creating new opportunities for European companies. Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs and Chief Legal Officer at Google's parent company Alphabet, stated in an interview with the Financial Times that the AI landscape is highly competitive, involving numerous players including major tech firms like Nvidia, Meta, and SpaceX, US AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic, France's Mistral, and several Chinese companies. Walker believes that this competitive environment has led to rapid changes in both pricing and technological capabilities, with prices falling while technological capabilities improve swiftly. Meanwhile, Teresa Ribera, the European Commissioner for Competition, is stepping up scrutiny of the AI industry. EU officials are concerned that the dominance of US tech giants may give them an unfair competitive advantage in the AI market, which is expected to become a crucial pillar supporting the EU economy.
