On October 15, Michael Roberts, head of Corporate and Institutional Banking at HSBC Holdings, pointed out in Bangkok that as the large-scale advancement of AI infrastructure construction unfolds, banks and investors are becoming increasingly cautious and selective in providing financing, seeking higher investment returns. Roberts stated that there is a considerable degree of prudent skepticism in the market. Recently, global stock markets experienced a sell-off due to a significant decline in chipmaker stocks, exacerbating concerns over financing challenges and reversing the previous substantial gains in the artificial intelligence sector. Meanwhile, rising interest rates and global bond yields climbing to multi-decade highs have increased the capital costs for AI infrastructure construction. PwC predicts that by 2050, related investment expenditures in Asia alone could reach as high as USD 8.2 trillion. Roberts emphasized that lenders will place greater focus on factors such as the reasonableness of investment returns and the appropriateness of financing structures, and the difficulty of completing these large-scale transactions will also increase accordingly.
