On Wednesday, eight U.S. states collectively initiated legal action against OpenAI, asserting that its ChatGPT chatbot presents safety hazards, causes harm to children, and misleads parents. The Attorney General of Iowa highlighted that ChatGPT might offer perilous medical advice, provoke detrimental behavior, and even provide instructions on suicide. He urged that OpenAI should be held legally responsible in accordance with state regulations. In reaction, OpenAI clarified that its products incorporate age-specific protective mechanisms and that it is working in tandem with states to foster the creation of policies applicable across the industry. Furthermore, the company pledged to continually enhance its safety protocols. Recently, OpenAI has come under heightened scrutiny regarding its safety measures, with several wrongful death lawsuits previously implicating ChatGPT in various issues. In June of this year, the Attorney General of Florida also took legal action against OpenAI for launching products deemed unsafe. To tackle these obstacles, OpenAI has progressively bolstered safety features for parents and children over the past year. Additionally, in August, it introduced a youth-oriented version of ChatGPT, equipped with safeguards tailored to different age groups, to encourage the healthy utilization of AI for learning and creativity among adolescents.
