On October 14, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of India’s Bharti Enterprises, urged governments worldwide at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum to swiftly establish a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI). He stressed the need to avoid reactive measures—waiting until AI systems spiral out of control and trigger severe consequences before intervening. Mittal acknowledged the urgency of AI governance but cautioned that regulations should not stifle technological innovation or industrial growth. Drawing parallels with the aviation sector, Mittal highlighted how global standardization in airport slot allocation and flight operations has fostered safety and industry prosperity. “The aviation industry’s success lies in its unified regulatory approach,” he noted, advocating for a similar balance between technological advancement and risk mitigation in AI. Mittal warned against a laissez-faire attitude toward AI development, arguing that addressing issues only after crises emerge is “profoundly shortsighted.” Instead, he called for proactive, collaborative governance to ensure AI’s benefits are realized responsibly.
