The senior leadership at General Motors (GM) has launched a constructive internal competition focused on AI applications. Every month, each business unit compares its AI utilization metrics, with the senior management team presenting these findings directly to CEO Mary Barra. Presently, GM is ramping up AI deployment across numerous departments, integrating it into areas like automotive design suggestions and supply chain risk detection, with the goal of streamlining the entire journey from vehicle conception to large-scale production. Amidst intense competitive pressure from Chinese automakers in the global electric vehicle arena, GM has identified AI as a key strategic priority. While its AI initiatives are still in their nascent phases, the company envisions broad AI applications in vehicle functionalities, product quality, and manufacturing processes down the line. GM underscores that firms failing to harness AI for efficiency gains will progressively lag behind. Moreover, GM's finance division is investigating AI's potential to reallocate analysts' time, enabling them to dedicate more effort to forecasting future trends and thereby elevating the team's overall productivity.
