Cambrian has officially achieved the highest-tier platinum membership status within the PyTorch Foundation and secured a seat on its Governing Board. This milestone positions Cambrian as the inaugural Chinese chip company to gain entry into the decision-making body of this globally influential AI open-source community. Earlier in May of this year, Alibaba Cloud also ascended to the ranks of platinum members within the foundation. The PyTorch Foundation, an open-source AI organization driven by community efforts under the auspices of the Linux Foundation, is tasked with overseeing pivotal AI projects, notably PyTorch. The Governing Board of the foundation is instrumental in charting the future course of PyTorch's development. For an extended period, Chinese AI chip companies have predominantly occupied downstream roles within the open-source ecosystem, primarily serving as adapters. In contrast, Cambrian has steadfastly adhered to the 'Upstream First' principle. Over the years, the company has consistently contributed code encompassing seven core modules to the PyTorch main branch, actively engaging in collaborative development endeavors. Notably, Cambrian has achieved Day 0 adaptation of mainstream open-source large models in vLLM online. On this occasion, Cambrian has appointed Wang, the Senior Director of AI Frameworks, to the Governing Board. Concurrently, Zhu Jing, a core maintainer of PyTorch, has joined the Technical Advisory Committee to collaboratively participate in formulating PyTorch rules. The Vice President of Software Engineering at Cambrian articulated that this strategic move is aimed at mitigating migration costs for developers and fostering enhanced support for multi-device backends within PyTorch. This significant advancement underscores Cambrian's metamorphosis from a domestic AI chip manufacturer to an active and influential participant in the global mainstream AI software ecosystem. It also signifies a paradigm shift in the value proposition of Chinese AI chips to the global open-source community, transitioning from mere adaptation to collaborative development.
