On September 8, a Bloomberg report from September 7 indicated that despite vigorous efforts by the Trump administration to dissuade countries from using Huawei’s AI chips, Malaysia remains inclined to select Huawei’s AI chips to power its sovereign AI initiatives. Sources speaking on condition of anonymity revealed that Malaysia is considering the use of Huawei’s AI hardware as the cornerstone of a 2 billion ringgit (roughly 3.317 billion yuan) project designed to strengthen its control over national data. At present, the exact quantity of chips Malaysia intends to purchase remains uncertain. Should Malaysia ultimately opt for Huawei’s chips, it would mark the first instance of a foreign government officially choosing Chinese AI chips over their US counterparts.
