Australian Communications Minister Anika Wells revealed that Australia may introduce new legislation to compel internet companies to allow users to disable algorithmic recommendations. The draft bill will be submitted to parliament for review this week. If passed, internet companies will be required to provide users with the option to turn off algorithms, preventing them from only seeing content tailored to their personal preferences. Wells stated that while many Australians recognize the emotional and practical value of algorithms, major tech companies should still empower users with choice, allowing them to decide for themselves what appears in their information feeds.
