On September 4 (local time), Google officially commenced the retirement process of Google Assistant on mobile devices, with the new-generation AI assistant, Gemini, set to fully take over its duties. Previously, Google had notified Android users via email that the Google Assistant service on mobile devices would be gradually discontinued from that date. Eligible Android devices will automatically switch to Gemini, with the migration process to be completed in batches over several weeks. Once completed, users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant. This adjustment covers a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, paired Wear OS smartwatches, supported headphones, and vehicles using Android Auto for screen projection. However, vehicles with built-in Google systems will temporarily retain the Google Assistant service. Additionally, Gemini will gradually be extended to devices such as Google TV and Google Home smart speakers. Since its launch in 2016, Google Assistant has been responsible for voice interaction tasks within the Android ecosystem. Gemini, on the other hand, is based on a generative AI model and is capable of handling more complex natural language requests. For devices that do not meet the minimum configuration requirements (Android 9 or later, at least 2GB of RAM) or are located in regions where Gemini services are not available, Google Assistant will be temporarily retained until the overall retirement plan concludes.
