On August 25, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated at a media roundtable in Washington that the future impact of artificial intelligence (AI) remains a 'major unknown,' with developing economies particularly at risk of being 'left behind' in the AI field. She pointed out that the global economy is facing headwinds from high debt, persistent inflation, and trade tensions, while also benefiting from the AI investment boom. Currently, negative supply shocks from the situation in the Middle East are competing with the positive demand surge driven by AI, with the extent of impact on different countries depending on their resilience to energy disruptions, macroeconomic vulnerabilities, and their positions in the AI supply chain.
