On August 21 (local time), AI research lab Anthropic PBC unveiled that it has secured the services of Amir Salek, the visionary behind Google’s custom chip endeavor, as a strategic move to lay the groundwork for its foray into the self-developed semiconductor sector. Salek is set to become a part of Anthropic's computing power division, reporting directly to James Bradbury. Until 2022, Salek was at the helm of Google’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) business, playing a pivotal role in the introduction of the inaugural seven generations of TPU chips. At present, Anthropic sources its chips from industry leaders like Nvidia, Google, and Amazon, yet it has articulated its ambition to cultivate an in-house chip enterprise and has initiated the recruitment of pertinent experts. The development of self-designed chips will empower Anthropic to tackle supply constraints and tailor chip architectures to specific needs. Its rival, OpenAI, is pursuing a parallel approach, having unveiled a chip co-developed with Broadcom, with plans to deploy it later this year.
