In August 2026, Google updated the Chrome help documentation, specifying that downloading on-device AI models requires approximately 20GB of available disk space, which is merely the minimum threshold for initiating the download. The actual space occupied by the models is significantly less. Additionally, Chrome requires an unlimited data network and hardware performance that meets the standards. On the same day, Microsoft Edge also raised the minimum space requirement for local AI models to 20GB and added a new requirement for a GPU with at least 5.5GB of video memory. Users can manually disable this feature in Chrome settings, while Edge will automatically clear the model when available space falls below 10GB. Previously, it was revealed that Chrome and Edge had been silently downloading local AI models of approximately 4GB in the background, affecting billions of devices worldwide and sparking widespread concerns among users regarding storage, bandwidth, and privacy control.
