On July 31, the South Korean government revealed its plan to allocate 20 trillion Korean won (approximately US$13.9 billion) to its sovereign wealth fund, with the aim of making strategic investments in artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, and related infrastructure. To achieve this, the South Korean government will set up a strategic investment account within the Korea Investment Corporation. This account will have an initial capital of at least 20 trillion Korean won, sourced from public institutions such as policy banks. The South Korean government emphasized that, considering South Korea's core strengths in cultivating an AI ecosystem and the increasing interest from global investors in the country, it is imperative for the government to adopt a proactive stance. To draw in global capital from foreign sovereign wealth funds and asset management firms, South Korea must establish itself as an anchor investor. The newly created strategic investment account will be permitted to invest in domestic assets within South Korea, thereby broadening its investment scope beyond just overseas assets.
