According to Engadget, Google DeepMind has formally dissolved the principal team behind AlphaFold, the groundbreaking project that once secured the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Over the past year, a significant portion of the team's key members have been redeployed to various initiatives, including the Gemini large-scale model project, enzyme design, nuclear fusion research, and genomics. Some have also transitioned to Isomorphic Labs, a pharmaceutical subsidiary of Alphabet. Notably, nearly a quarter of the full-time researchers have opted to depart from the company. The Vice President of Research at DeepMind explained that this realignment reflects a strategic pivot within the company, emphasizing the development of a research support system driven by Gemini. This system aims to automate research workflows and bolster DeepMind's competitive edge against rivals such as OpenAI in the pursuit of advanced AI agents.
