On July 20 local time, Federal Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín of the Northern District of California approved a $1.5 billion settlement agreement for artificial intelligence company Anthropic, aimed at resolving a class-action lawsuit filed by a group of writers in 2024. The writers accused Anthropic of using their works without permission to train its AI chatbot Claude, and the judge dismissed objections that the compensation amount was too low.
