On March 13, 2026, a domestically developed implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) system, designed for hand motor function compensation, achieved a historic milestone by securing the world’s inaugural medical device registration certificate for an invasive BCI. Just four months later, on July 13, following regulatory approval, the first clinical prescription for this system was issued in Shanghai, paving the way for the world’s first successful implantation surgery.

Shanghai’s relevant authorities expedited the approval process, while the hospital concurrently managed critical tasks such as price registration, equipment procurement, and patient selection. Presently, the system has been integrated into Shanghai’s “Hu Huibao” insurance program, with medical insurance and health authorities actively refining payment policies and operational guidelines to broaden its clinical applications.
