On July 13, a report from Business Insider revealed that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted a message on the X platform, subtly criticizing the double standards adopted by AI companies such as Anthropic concerning model distillation. He highlighted that these companies, while championing the reasonable right to utilize publicly accessible data for model training, simultaneously impose stringent limitations on model distillation techniques. Model distillation involves training a less powerful model using the output from a more advanced one. Nadella argued that this stance is contradictory, suggesting that if knowledge were to flow in only one direction, companies controlling AI infrastructure would monopolize the profits, leaving the creators of knowledge without any gain. Although he refrained from naming names directly, his comments clearly alluded to Anthropic, given that its CEO had publicly expressed opposition to other companies using Claude to train their own models.
