On July 9, OpenAI made public its decision to cease operations of its AI browser Atlas, which has been functional for less than a year, on August 9. The company plans to incorporate certain features of Atlas into the ChatGPT desktop application and the Google Chrome extension. Following the discontinuation of Atlas, users will gain the ability to surf the internet, access accounts, download files, and engage with web pages directly via the in-built browser within the ChatGPT desktop application, eliminating the need to exit the app. Concurrently, OpenAI is in the process of developing a fresh ChatGPT extension for Chrome, enabling users to pose queries regarding the current webpage, summarize content, or commence lengthy tasks. Moreover, OpenAI is operating an independent cloud browser on its servers, facilitating AI agents to accomplish tasks on behalf of users. Earlier, OpenAI had already discontinued the AI video generation tool Sora owing to reductions in 'side projects'. Post this restructuring, ChatGPT is evolving into a seamless workspace encompassing Chrome, desktop applications, and AI agents.
