Back in March of this year, Microsoft made public its decision to halt the automatic, default installation of Microsoft 365 Copilot in Windows 11. This decision came in the wake of significant user pushback against the obligatory incorporation of AI functionalities. Despite Microsoft's ambition to propel its 'AI Everywhere' initiative forward, veteran users and PC aficionados contended that the integration of AI did not notably improve their experience; rather, it introduced disruptions. Users expressed a preference for AI features to be optional rather than mandatory. In response, Microsoft recalibrated its approach, reinstating user autonomy by enabling them to decline automatic deployment via the administration backend.

Nevertheless, in June 2026, Microsoft revealed its intention to reinstate the automatic installation of Microsoft 365 Copilot on qualifying Windows 11 devices. The sole exemption to this policy will be users located within the European Economic Area. Furthermore, enterprise administrators will retain the ability to opt out of automatic deployment, thereby maintaining control over application management within their respective organizations.
