On June 9, Thomas Rennier, the European Commission's spokesperson on digital economy matters, weighed in on the controversy surrounding Apple's Siri AI. He revealed that the Commission had held multiple discussions with Apple concerning the interoperability standards required for Siri AI under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). However, Apple has not complied with the relevant DMA provisions. Despite Apple's request for an interoperability exemption period of at least 18 months, the European Commission firmly turned it down, stressing that EU regulations are not open to negotiation. Rennier further clarified that while the DMA does not bar Apple from introducing new products, it is imperative that no market leader should restrict market access. Earlier, Apple had cited security concerns as the reason for its inability to meet the EU regulatory body's demand for granting extensive access to user devices for third-party AI systems.
