In May 2026, technology news outlets reported that Google is experimenting with modifications to the usage-tracking system for the free tier of its Gemini service. The company is transitioning from a system that automatically resets quotas over shorter intervals to a "fixed weekly quota" model. Under this new system, the user interface will clearly indicate the weekly usage limit as well as the percentage of the quota that has been consumed. At present, this updated feature is being incrementally introduced to a select group of users, and Google has not yet specified an official rollout date for all users. The primary objective of this change is to enhance the efficiency of resource distribution; however, it may result in free users who frequently utilize the service reaching their weekly limits earlier in the week.
