According to sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft is seeking to acquire artificial intelligence startups with the aim of reducing its reliance on OpenAI, stockpiling AI talent, and advancing its goal of developing advanced AI models by next year. This spring, Microsoft expressed interest in acquiring Cursor, a code-generation startup, but abandoned the plan due to regulatory scrutiny. Currently, Microsoft is in negotiations with Inception, whose seed funding round of $50 million in late 2025 saw participation from Microsoft's venture capital fund, M12.
