On May 13, 2026, a research team led by Academician Pan Jianwei from the University of Science and Technology of China, in collaboration with several domestic research institutions and universities, announced the successful development of a programmable quantum computing prototype named ‘Jiuzhang IV.’ When tasked with Gaussian boson sampling, this prototype demonstrated a computational capability far exceeding that of the world’s currently fastest supercomputer, El Capitan. Specifically, it achieved a calculation speed 1,054 times faster, thereby firmly establishing itself as the leading example of ‘quantum computational supremacy’ on the global stage. The team’s significant findings were published in the prestigious international academic journal Nature on the same day.
