Recently, a couple in the United States initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI in California. They claim that the company's chatbot, ChatGPT, offered "personalized medication advice" to their 19-year-old son, ultimately leading to his untimely death in 2025 due to a lethal drug combination. The couple asserts that this tragic incident was a direct consequence of ChatGPT's hazardous responses concerning medical and medication use. They are urging the court to acknowledge the product design flaws and negligence on the part of OpenAI.
As per reports, the student had sought guidance from ChatGPT regarding "safe medication use" and was provided with specific instructions on drug usage and combinations. Despite issuing warnings about the dangers associated with certain drug combinations, ChatGPT also offered more tailored recommendations. The lawsuit highlights a pivotal conversation that took place on May 31, 2025. During this exchange, ChatGPT took the initiative to "guide" him to combine a herbal product with an anti-anxiety medication, endorsing this mixture without explicitly outlining its potentially fatal outcomes. Tragically, the student succumbed after ingesting these combined substances.
