Zhuang Juntang, who held the position of head of pre-training at xAI, has tendered his resignation. During his two-year tenure at xAI, he took the helm in steering the pre-training endeavors for multiple iterations of the Grok model. Prior to joining xAI, Zhuang had a two-year stint at OpenAI, where he amassed a wealth of academic and professional expertise. His departure from xAI unfolds against the backdrop of a wave of resignations following the company's move away from independent operations, with numerous employees announcing their exits in a single day. Since mid-2024, xAI's co-founders have been exiting the company in succession, and over 80 departures have been confirmed in the past year. Despite Musk's efforts to tackle the personnel crisis, newly hired staff have also been leaving the company at a rapid pace. Nevertheless, xAI's flagship product, Grok, has still announced an update, introducing a new connector feature. Musk has also dismissed rumors of 'Grok's demise,' asserting that the new Grok model is progressing through its normal training phase.
