In September 2024, Li Xiaoliang, a lawyer actively practicing in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, was taken aback to find that upon searching his name and professional title on Baidu's mobile application and website, Baidu's "AI Smart Reply" erroneously stated that he had been "sentenced to three years in prison," accompanied by a photograph of him in his legal attire. The Jiangbei New Area People's Court in Nanjing, in its initial judgment, determined that Baidu's actions constituted defamation and mandated that Baidu issue a formal written apology. Baidu subsequently challenged this verdict, yet in March 2026, the Nanjing Intermediate People's Court dismissed the appeal, thereby affirming the original decision. Given Baidu's failure to adhere to the court's ruling, Li Xiaoliang has now initiated enforcement proceedings.
