Meta recently terminated its partnership with outsourcing company Sama, which had been commissioned to use image data collected by Ray-Ban smart glasses to provide training materials for Meta's generative AI system. Subsequently, Sama announced the layoff of 1,108 employees. Some employees claimed they were "retaliatorily" dismissed for disclosing to the media that the videos they reviewed contained a large amount of highly private content. These employees stated that they were forced to watch intimate scenes from users' homes, including sexual activities, toilet use, and bank card information, and that the automatic blurring algorithm often failed. Meta responded that the partnership was terminated because Sama did not meet expected standards, but did not provide specifics. Sama insisted that it met all standards and had not received negative feedback. A Kenyan workers' organization believes the real motive was to silence employees who spoke publicly about the matter.
