This month, a report from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics revealed that Emil Michael, the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense, pocketed a staggering $24 million from selling shares of xAI—an unlisted company that partners with the defense department. Since assuming his role in May 2025, Michael has been at the forefront of AI-related negotiations, championing the integration of artificial intelligence within the Department of Defense.

In March 2025, Michael disclosed his ownership of xAI stocks. On January 9 of this year, he cashed in, reaping profits estimated between $5 million and $25 million. Coincidentally (or perhaps not), during his tenure, the Pentagon inked two significant cooperation agreements with xAI. Given these circumstances, the Office of Government Ethics had previously urged Michael to divest his shares to sidestep potential conflicts of interest.
