According to senior US government officials, the Pentagon is considering ending its collaboration with artificial intelligence company Anthropic due to the company's restrictions on the military's use of its models. The Pentagon hopes that AI tools can be used for all lawful purposes, including weapons development, intelligence gathering, and battlefield operations. Anthropic, however, insists on prohibiting its models from being used for mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapon systems. After months of fruitless negotiations, the Pentagon has grown impatient and indicated that it may scale back or terminate the cooperation. Previously, Anthropic's AI model, Claude, was reported to have been used in US military operations against Venezuela, sparking ethical and compliance controversies.
