At the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), NVIDIA unveiled the launch of its Alpamayo series. This series encompasses open AI models, simulation tools, and datasets, all designed with the intention of tackling the safety challenges that autonomous driving presents. The linchpin of this series is the Alpamayo 1 model. It's a vision-language-action (VLA) model boasting 10 billion parameters. This model empowers autonomous vehicles to possess cognitive abilities akin to those of humans. It can effectively handle complex driving scenarios without the need for prior training or labeling. NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, announced that the first vehicle equipped with this cutting-edge technology will make its debut on U.S. roads in the first quarter of 2026. In reaction to this news, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, commented that achieving 99% accuracy in autonomous driving systems is relatively straightforward. However, he emphasized that the real hurdle lies in addressing the long-tail problems associated with autonomous driving. These include dealing with extreme weather conditions, sudden obstacles, and other rare edge cases, all of which pose significant challenges.
