What makes the final stage especially deceptive is the constant feeling that you're just one step away from the finish line. One more fix—and that's it. One more sprint—and you're ready to launch. And this "just a bit more" keeps repeating for weeks, sometimes months. Every delay seems like the last one. But that final 10% somehow never gets done.
Often referred to as "the 90% trap," this stage is one of the most common software delivery challenges and a key reason behind many software project delays.

In the final stretch of a software project, teams do the work that determines whether the system can actually run in production. These tasks are less visible than feature development and harder to plan upfront. They often appear gradually, as the product is tested more thoroughly and exposed to more realistic conditions. Even when minor and manageable, the issues surfacing at the final stage create a layer of complexity that slows progress and extends timelines.

With AI tools, teams can generate code, build features, and create working prototypes in a fraction of the time it used to take. Still, this speed doesn't remove the complexity that appears closer to launch.
AI can accelerate common development tasks, making it well-suited for prototyping and early-stage builds. Production hardening involves making systems stable under load, handling failure scenarios, improving performance, and ensuring consistent behavior. These tasks require careful analysis, testing, and iteration.
AI can assist with parts of this process, but it does not replace the effort needed to make a system reliable in real use.

The last 10% becomes more demanding in fintech and other regulated products, where, beyond features, production readiness in software depends on meeting strict compliance requirements and integrations.
Compliance is often underestimated at the start of a project in favor of building core functionality. However, requirements such as data protection, auditability, and access control affect how the system is designed. If they are introduced too late, teams can face significant rework.
Fintech products depend heavily on external services, such as payment providers, banking APIs, identity verification systems, and others. During development, when tested in limited scenarios, integrations may appear stable. Closer to launch, transactions may fail under certain conditions, third-party services may respond inconsistently, and approval or verification processes may not behave as expected.
Because these systems are outside the team's direct control, resolving issues can take longer and involve coordination with external providers.
In regulated products, users expect the system to be secure and transparent. Audit trails, access controls, and monitoring are essential for both compliance and user confidence. If these elements are not fully in place, the product is not ready for release.
