On Thursday, the South Korean government made an announcement stating that, starting from February of the coming year, it will distribute more than 10,000 GPUs, procured from NVIDIA, to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, academic institutions, and national AI projects. This initiative is aimed at nurturing the domestic AI ecosystem and forms a key part of the South Korean government's broader strategy to construct a resilient AI infrastructure.
Previously, South Korea had already allocated approximately $947.2 million to acquire around 10,000 GPUs from NVIDIA. This marked the initial phase of a grand plan to obtain a total of 50,000 GPUs by the year 2030. Furthermore, the South Korean government has also outlined plans to collaborate with companies like Samsung Electronics. Through this joint effort, they intend to procure 260,000 GPUs collectively, with the goal of establishing a large-scale AI factory.
