During an exclusive interview, Elon Musk, the founder of xAI, drew a comparison between the upcoming AI-powered encyclopedia, "Grokipedia"—set to launch in October—and the "Modern Library of Alexandria." He expressed his firm commitment to making the entire project open-source. Musk revealed his ambitious vision of dispatching this vast repository of knowledge to the Moon, Mars, and even deeper into the cosmos, as a safeguard against the potential loss of human knowledge.

At present, Grokipedia boasts a collection of around 885,000 articles, all meticulously generated by the Grok large model and annotated with verification timestamps. The platform encourages user engagement by allowing interactive error corrections. However, it's worth noting that the number of entries in Grokipedia is significantly lower compared to Wikipedia. Musk outlined his future plans, stating that once the content quality reaches a "satisfactory level," the encyclopedia will be rebranded as the "Encyclopedia Galactica." Additionally, he mentioned that APIs and database downloads will be made accessible to the public.

In a collaborative effort, xAI is teaming up with material laboratories to etch the Grokipedia data onto oxide wafers. These wafers are slated to be deployed on SpaceX missions starting in 2026, as part of a broader initiative for "multi-planetary backups."
