On November 5, 2025, reports surfaced indicating that Amazon had dispatched a cease-and-desist letter to Perplexity. The letter demanded that Perplexity bar its AI - powered browser, Comet, from conducting shopping activities on behalf of users within the Amazon marketplace. Amazon leveled accusations against Perplexity's AI agent, asserting that it employed deceptive tactics during the shopping process. This, Amazon claimed, not only breached service terms but also degraded the overall shopping experience for customers and exposed them to privacy risks.

Prior to this, Amazon had made a request to Perplexity, asking it to hold off on deploying such AI agents until a mutual agreement could be reached. However, Perplexity went ahead and, in its newly launched browser Comet, concealed the agent's true identity while carrying out shopping operations. Amazon's efforts to block this technically proved futile, as Perplexity promptly rolled out a new version designed to circumvent Amazon's blocking measures.

In response, Perplexity fired back, accusing Amazon of engaging in anti - competitive behavior. It argued that consumers should have the autonomy to select their preferred AI shopping agents. Moreover, Perplexity alleged that Amazon was attempting to strip users of their rights, all in a bid to boost its own advertising revenue.
