On June 5, South Korea's current account surplus in April approached record levels, highlighting its semiconductor-driven export boom. Data released by the Bank of Korea on Friday showed that the current account surplus reached USD 28.3 billion in April, down from USD 37.9 billion in March but still the second-highest on record, continuing South Korea's export surplus trend for nearly three years. Exports rose nearly 55% year-on-year, with a goods trade surplus of USD 33.9 billion, also the second-highest in history. Semiconductors and IT products continued to drive growth, while petroleum product exports also increased, with imports rising by 16.1%. This data further indicates that South Korea's trade sector remains a major beneficiary of the global AI investment boom, with chip exports continuing to offset the risks of geopolitical turmoil to global commerce.
