The Ministry of Finance in Japan is contemplating adjustments to the tax exemption policy for small imported parcels, with the objective of fostering fair competition and stemming the influx of illicit goods. Presently, Japan exempts customs duties and consumption taxes on imported goods valued at less than ¥10,000. Nonetheless, the burgeoning cross-border e-commerce sector, particularly platforms like Amazon, has sparked concerns among domestic Japanese enterprises regarding a potential imbalance in market competition. Reports indicate that the current tax exemption policy will remain in place until 2026, after which period modifications may be introduced. Furthermore, numerous regions globally, including the European Union and Vietnam, have similarly tightened taxation and regulation on small imported parcels.
