Drawing inspiration from the lateral line system of fish, researchers at the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have unveiled a groundbreaking bionic lateral line sensor, dubbed FlowSight. This innovative sensor leverages autonomous vision technology to equip underwater robots with the ability to precisely perceive water flow, thereby significantly enhancing their autonomous navigation and environmental monitoring capabilities in intricate aquatic environments. FlowSight detects water flow via flexible silicone tentacles, where an integrated high-definition camera captures deformation data, which is then analyzed by a sophisticated deep learning model to determine water flow speed and direction.
