International testers have uncovered a phenomenon where the LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof of the Volvo EX90 can adversely affect smartphone cameras. During experiments, when the smartphone camera was directed towards the active LiDAR, the screen instantly displayed numerous spots, which multiplied as the phone was moved. Industry experts analyze that while the laser emitted by LiDAR is safe for human vision, it poses risks to sensitive components like CMOS chips in smartphone cameras, particularly those equipped with telephoto lenses. The LiDAR pulses can strike the sensor's pixel array, leading to localized overheating or pixel burnout. In response, Volvo has issued a cautionary note, recommending against pointing smartphone cameras directly at LiDAR sensors for recording purposes.
