GM Halts Production at Canadian Facility

On April 13, the Canadian Auto Workers Union, Unifor, affirmed on April 12 that General Motors (GM) would temporarily cease operations at its CAMI assembly plant located in Ingersoll, Ontario. The plant will initiate layoffs on April 14, followed by a partial resumption of production in May. However, the facility will undergo another shutdown period thereafter, not reopening until October 2025. During this extended downtime, GM intends to upgrade the plant in preparation for the manufacture of commercial electric vehicles scheduled for 2026. According to GM, once production resumes in October, the plant will operate on a single shift basis, resulting in long-term unemployment for approximately 500 workers.
