On March 4, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, resulting in a decline in European automakers' share prices on Tuesday. Despite having factories within the United States, these manufacturers are heavily reliant on the supply chain of parts and components imported from Canada and Mexico. Furthermore, they maintain production plants in these two countries specifically to manufacture vehicles for export to the United States. Lindsay James, an investment strategist at the asset management firm Quilter Investors, highlighted that Mexico serves as a crucial production hub for numerous U.S. automakers, including General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. Approximately 15% of cars sold in the United States are produced in Mexico, suggesting that the Mexican economy could face significant repercussions.
