On October 22, Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer based in the U.S., made public its acquisition of Third Dimension AI, an artificial intelligence company. This strategic move is designed to expedite the development and validation processes of its autonomous driving systems. Third Dimension AI stands out for its expertise in leveraging real-world data to craft highly accurate and controllable 3D virtual environments. Such environments allow for extensive simulation of intricate driving scenarios, significantly diminishing the need to test autonomous driving models against the rare and perilous situations that occasionally occur on actual roads. Moreover, Rivian has plans to roll out an early autonomous driving experience initiative in California and Florida this December. Under this program, which operates on an invitation-only basis, select owners of second-generation R1 and R2 vehicles will be granted the opportunity to experience point-to-point autonomous driving capabilities, all under the supervision of a driver.
